The Vault is a mysterious artifact on the planet Terminus. It was discovered by colonists shortly after their arrival on the planet.

General Information

The Vault hovers above the ground and generates a null field that discourages anything from approaching it, including humans and animals.[1] Shortly after arriving on Terminus via slow ship, the colonists of the Foundation discovered the Vault. The null field incapacitated the initial scouting party, resulting in the colonists giving the structure a wide berth as they built their settlement. Rumors about its origin sprang up, ranging from it being an alien artifact, to a surveillance device sent ahead by the Galactic Empire.[2]

The local children of the colony played a game to see how close they can get to the Vault before the field forced them back, planting little flags in the ground to mark their progress. Salvor Hardin, the Warden of Terminus, is the only person able to withstand the effects of the null field. When Poly Verisof attempted to get close to the Vault in an effort to see the "ghost", he was rendered unconscious by the null field and had to be dragged to safety by Salvor.[1]

In The Leap, it is revealed that the Vault was in fact Hari Seldon's coffin, converted through nanobots into an interactive tomb containing a backup of his consciousness, who then reveals the real reason for the Foundation's existence - to overthrow the Galactic Empire.

In 12,240 Era Imperial, sirens sounded in Terminus City, signalling that the Vault was preparing to open. The null field began to recede, and the Foundation prepared for the return of the prophet.[3] When the Vault opened, Seldon did not emerge. When Warden Jaegger Fount made to enter, he was killed by the Vault and the words "Hober Mallow" were inscribed on the outside of the structure.[4]
