Cleon XI is a recurring character in the Apple TV+ series Foundation. He was the eleventh Emperor of the Genetic Dynasty. At the time of Hari Seldon's arrest and the subsequent founding of the Foundation, he ruled as Brother Dusk. As a retired Emperor, he was unrepentant, opinionated, and was not to be underestimated. Cleon XI is portrayed by Terrence Mann, first appearing in the episode "The Emperor's Peace".
General Information
Cleon XI ruled as Brother Dusk at the time the Foundation was proposed and established. He and Cleon XII helped to educate the young Cleon XIII on the subtleties of ruling the Galactic Empire, along with their aide Demerzel. Cleon XI was present when he met with delegates from Thespis and Anacreon, having to maintain the peace when two Imperial appraisers were caught in the crossfire during their mining dispute. He played a part in seeing Hari Seldon's followers exiled to Terminus, though the role was in large part carried out by Cleon XII.[2]
In his old age, Cleon XII began to grow frustrated with his growing weaknesses, such as faltering from a latter and seeing his hand beginning to shake as he worked on the Mural of Souls. Demerzel accompanied him to the Scar, where the Star Bridge crashed into Trantor. He met with a priest of the Seer Church, and wondered if Gaal Dornick was a true seer who foresaw the fall of the Empire.[3]
Nineteen years later, Cleon XII began to prepare for his ascension. He began to wonder about his legacy, and what had become of Cleon I's dream with the Star Bridge orbiting Trantor in decay. His brothers remind him that they are the true legacy of Cleon I, and Trantor Station is destroyed to prevent it from threatening the planet. He prepares to ascend, now named Brother Darkness, and is presented with the newborn Cleon XIV, the new brother Dawn. As the ceremony took place, Darkness heard Dawn's crying and believed something is wrong with the child. Despite his apprehension, Darkness ascended, leaving the Genetic Dynasty with three members once more.
He was known as "The Painter" for his impressive artistic skills, and his dedication to working on the Mural of Souls.[1]
