"I should have seen the completion of the Star Bridge. Me. My mind. My eyes. We should have ridden up to the orbital platform together and looked down on all that we had made."
—Cleon I to Demerzel[src]

The Star Bridge was a space elevator that allowed transit to and from the surface of Trantor. It began construction during the reign of Emperor Cleon I, until it was destroyed by terrorists in 12,067 Era Imperial.

Description[]

"You should believe in the minds that built Trantor, built the jumpdrive, that built the Star Bridge."
—Jerril to Gaal Dornick[src]

The Star Bridge was an orbital tether and space elevator located on the planet Trantor. The tether, also referred to as the stalk, connected the surface station in Trantor City to the orbital platform in geosynchronous orbit. Passenger cars travelled up and down the stalk, and the journey from the orbital platform to the surface took fourteen hours.[1]

History[]

"I cannot find words for it."
"The words are the destruction of the Star Bridge and the deaths of 100 million citizens of Trantor."
—Honored Diplomat Shae un Shae and Emperor Cleon XII[src]
Star Bridge Untethered

The Star Bridge, untethered from the orbital platform after the triggering of a nano-lace explosive

The vision of Emperor Cleon I, the Star Bridge began construction towards the end of his reign, and he was regretful that he would not live to see its completion.[2] In 12,067 Era Imperial, during the rule of Cleon XII, the Star Bridge and the orbital platform were attacked by terrorists. A terrorist identified as being from Anacreon used a nano-lace explosive to blow up a passenger car during the descent phase, severing the Star Bridge from the station. The Bridge fell, wrapping itself around the planet and destroying several levels of the city planet in a swath of destruction that left millions of Imperial citizens dead.[1] The wound in the planet became known as the Scar.[3]
