Synopsis[]

The Anacreons and their hostages board the fabled Invictus warship. The bond between Brother Dawn and Azura intensifies.

Plot[]

In the Anthor Belt, the Beggar's Lament approaches the drifting hulk of the Invictus. With the ship's defenses still active, Salvor Hardin is forced to lead a boarding party in a space-suited jump to land on the hull of the warship.

On the Maiden, Brother Day questions Demerzel's actions during Zephyr Halima's speech. He is also brought word that Halima speech at Proxima Opal's funerals have led to her becoming the front runner to be the new Promixa over Zephyr Gilat. Day meets with Halima near the Spiral, and attempts to begin negotiations with her, believing her position to be a tactic. He is stunned to discover that Halima truly believes that the Genetic Dynasty is wrong and will lead them to ruin.

Phara Keaen leads her team of Anacreons and hostages aboard the Invictus, but the boarding is not without casualties. They find the ship powered down and derelict, with the long-dead crew floating in the corridors. Restoring systems, it is discovered that the ship is on a countdown towards its next random jump. The boarders have four hours to take control of the ship.

Brother Day makes a bold play to counter Halima's rhetoric; he intends to walk the great Spiral and let the Triple Goddesses decide his fate. On Trantor, Brother Dawn and Azura Odili grow ever closer, rendezvousing in secret. During one meeting, Azura presents Dawn with a gift; color-correction 'hesives that would fix his color blindness. Dawn thanks her but worries that wearing them could bring Day and Dusk's to notice all of the differences between them and Dawn. Azura begins to convince Dawn that escaping the Imperial Palace and his duties would be the best course of action.

On the Raven, Gaal Dornick finds that she carried a digitized version of Hari Seldon's consciousness with her to the ship. Disorientated, the projection learns that Raych Foss is dead, Gaal is not where she is supposed to be on Terminus, and that he is dead. Hari's digital avatar explains why Raych killed him and the some of the finer details of the Plan. As Hari questions Gaal about why she came to his cabin on that night, Gaal comes to a revelation about her own abilities.
