Korell is a planet in the Whassalian Rift, in the Outer Reach. It is ruled by an authoritarian regime.

General Information[]

Korell is a planet located within the Whassalian Rift[3] of the Outer Reach.[1] Korell's solar system contained two stars, and the planet's orbit was circumbinary, circling both suns. The stars were orbited by a halo of space dust and debris.[2]

Korell has a temperate climate and it is populated by over three billion inhabitants.[2] It is ruled by the authoritarian regime of Commdor Argo. The regime is repressive and capital punishment is practiced frequently. The Foundation is known to the local population, but maintains little to no presence there.[3]

Korell had a number of cities, and the light from them could be seen from space. The planet maintained a spaceport, but their own ships did not venture too far from the system, going only to local star systems. Traders made occasional visits to the Korell.[2] Its capital city consists of large parks, old low-rise residence buildings and newer high-rise modernist towers.[3] Korellian chocolate was a local product.[4]

History[]

The planet was part of the Galactic Empire, until sometime prior to 12,240 Era Imperial. By this time, it was ruled by an authoritarian monarchy under Commdor Argo, who was advised by Forcer Wallick. Argo was a flamboyant warlord who had seized control of Korell, and would enforce his rule through public execution by a device known as "Titan's prick."[2]

In 12,240 Era Imperial, when Demerzel reported to Cleon XVII that there were rumors of an alliance building in the Outer Reach led by the Foundation, Korell was one of the planets included in her report.[1]

In 12,240 Era Imperial, Hober Mallow attempted to run a con on the Commdor to steal the prized Eye of Korell, but was caught and sentenced to death. However, Hober outwitted the Commdor using a piece of technology known as a castling device, escaped the execution and stole the Eye of Korell. He escaped the planet aboard a Church of the Galactic Spirit whisper-ship, Spirit Rising.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Korell was inspired by societies in countries of the former Soviet Union and Brutalist architecture. VFX Supervisor Chris MacLean described the look and feel of Korell to be "Janet Jackson's North Korea."[2]
