Jumpships are starships capable of faster-than-light travel, using specialized jumpdrives.[1] Jumpdrive technology was considered to be a state secret by the Galactic Empire, leading to only the Empire utilizing them.[3]
Jumpships were operated by Spacers,[1] genetically bred Humans capable of undergoing the rigors of faster-than-light travel without being affected by the discontinuity of the jump.[4] Jumpships were chartered by the Empire to transport citizens between planets, such as from Synnax to Trantor,[1] and from Trantor to the Maiden.[4] The Superluminal Armada used its own version of jump ships, including the Trireme-class ship represented by the Aegis,[4] the Shining Destiny,[5] and the Invictus,[3] as well as the Genetic Dynasty's personal jumpship, the Rubicon.[4]
By 12,240 Era Imperial, the Foundation project on Terminus were capable of creating their own jump ships after reverse-engineering the captured Invictus. Known as whisper-ships, these vessels were more advanced than those of the stagnating Empire, and seemingly did not require such large spinning rings to operate,[2] nor did they require Spacers. Ships of this class, including the Spirit Rising, were used by the Church of the Galactic Spirit.[6] An entire fleet of whisper-ships were used by the Foundation's military forces.[7]
