Imperial switchbacks were a type of fighter craft used by the Galactic Empire's Superluminal Armada. They are kept as defensive craft to defend large capital ships such as the Shining Destiny. When landed, the bottom of the craft is folded ninety degrees. During launch, the folded bottom of the ship will flip ninety degrees, making the shape of the craft vertical once more.[1]
In 12,240 Era Imperial, the Shining Destiny, under the command of Bel Riose, deployed a squadron of switchbacks headed by Glawen Curr against Terminus during the Second Crisis. During the first part of the battle, they fought against a fleet of whisper-ships, which they were able to defeat when Glawen worked out that the ships held a vulnerable navigation-centre in the stern. After this, they proceeded to attack the Invictus, a formerly Imperial warship that had been lost centuries ago before being rediscovered by the Foundation. Though several switchbacks were destroyed, the Invictus was disabled by Glawen's own fighter, though his craft was then brought down to the surface of Terminus by the dying warship.[1] Though Glawen himself was saved by the Vault,[2] his fighter was destroyed when the Invictus was deorbited into the surface of Terminus to destroy the planet with its singularity.[1]
