The symbol of the Galactic Empire

The Galactic Empire was the ruling body of the galaxy, controlled from Trantor historically by a succession of Emperors and Empresses. By 11,686 Era Imperial, the Empire was ruled by the Genetic Dynasty established by Cleon1. At its height, the Empire ruled over eight trillion individuals[1] and controlled over 10,000 worlds.[2] It was predicted by Hari Seldon via the application of Psychohistory that the Empire would collapse and lead to a 30,000 year dark age before a second Galactic Empire arose.[1]

The Galactic Empire minted physical coins to be used for currency. One side had a stylized image of the Emperor on it, while the reverse had an image of a bishop's claw. The sides were referred to as "Crowns" and "Cats" respectively.[3]

History[]

In 12,067 Era Imperial, Emperor Cleon XII oversaw an attempted mediation between Anacreon and Thespis after a dispute in the Outer Reach turned violent. At the same time, Hari Seldon published a theory based on Psychohistory, that the Empire would collapse and lead to a 30,000 year dark age. This theory and its dissemination to the public, caused unrest within the Empire. Seldon was arrested and put on trial. During the trial, a terrorist bombing of the Star Bridge caused massive casualties.[1]

In 12,068 Era Imperial, Cleon12 ordered the public execution of the delegations from Anacreon and Thespis. During the executions, which spared only the ambassadors from each delegation, the worlds of Anacreon and Thespis were bombarded from orbit by Imperial Trireme-class ships.[4]

By 12,240 Era Imperial, the Empire had began contracting in size, having effectively abandoned the Outer Reach.[5]

In 12,392 Era Imperial, the Empire had resized to a sustainable 6,342 planets. The Outer Reach and the middle band were outside of the Empire's control, and they had ceded territory, including a slew of breadbasket worlds, to the growing Foundation. With the loss of the Spacers, the Empire was reliant on jump gate technology to deploy its military.[6]
