The Foundation was an organisation created by Hari Seldon to safeguard the knowledge of civilization by creating the Encyclopedia Galactica. As Hari had predicted the fall of the Galactic Empire through the study of Psychohistory, he also advocated for the creation of the Foundation, a group whose goal would be to safeguard humanity's knowledge and sciences to allow society to be rebuilt after the fall.
History[]
As Hari Seldon began planning for the Foundation, he engineered a situation that involved his arrest by the Galactic Empire and eventual exile to the planet Terminus.[1] Following the destruction of the Star Bridge, Hari and his followers traveled to Terminus aboard the slow ship Deliverance. The trip would take them five years, but the time aboard the vessel was spent training to survive on the inhospitable planet.[2] The stated goal of the Foundation was to create an Encyclopedia Galactica as a way of preserving Humanity's knowledge.[1] Several months into the voyage, Hari Seldon was murdered by his own protege, Raych Foss. Gaal Dornick, who was believed to be a conspirator, was ejected in a cryopod by Raych, who remained behind on the Deliverance[2] and was subsequently executed for the crime.[3]
As time goes by, the Foundation with its assembled scientists were able to not only totally preserve the essentials of humanity's knowledge and sciences from loss, and thus prevent galactic regression into ignorant barbarism, despite aborting development of the Encyclopedia Galactica, but actually advance them to a level that is above the Empire, such as the whisper-ships with its jumpdrive that is capable of executing space jumps without the assistance of Spacers - a technology (or technique) that is not yet achieved by the Empire, potentially attracting itself to become a target of the Empire and other parties within the periphery in the future.
Leadership[]
The Foundation is lead by the Director, who also serves as a head of Foundation's Council.
This is an incomplite list of people who held the position of Director:
- Hari Seldon – de-jure, until 12,068 EI
- Lewis Pirenne – 12,068 EI - 12,102 EI
- Sef Sermak – as of 12,240 EI (139 FE)
Worlds[]
The Foundation was located at the Outer Reach of the galaxy. It's capital was Terminus City located on the world of the same name. As of 12,240 Era Imperial there were 7 worlds under the direct influence of the Foundation:
- Anacreon
- Thespis
- Smyrno
- Sayshell
- Konom
- Daribow
- Glyptal IV
The Foundation also maintained some presence all around the Outer Reach, including worlds like Siwenna and Korell.
Future[]
From the books of Issac Asimov. The premise for the creation of the Encyclopedia Galactica was not meant to be the primary objective of Hari Seldon's plan. Instead, the assembled scientists, its preserved knowledge and sciences, and the Foundation are destined to form the next galactic hegemon, a successor to the Galactic Empire. With Terminus to act as the new capital of the galaxy after humanity's eventual exit from regression and stagnation.
